Why Do I Do This??

The first four days of this week have been horrendous. In order to make it through Friday with a positive outlook, I had to come home on Thursday and remind myself why I chose this career.

I became a teacher because I enjoy kids.
I became a teacher because I am have an appetite for learning.
I became a teacher because I am up for a challenge.
I became a teacher because I am creative.
I became a teacher to be part of a community.
I became a teacher to learn how to be a mom.
I became a teacher to model for others.
I became a teacher because I had some great role models.
I became a teacher because I understand.
I became a teacher because I was sure I could make a difference.

There…I think it is all coming back now. I became a teacher because I couldn’t imagine being anything else!

  1. Great list, Wanda.
It sure seems like you are "up for the challenge."

  2. When the days get you down, you've found a good way to get back in the right frame of mind. Hope today is a better day.

  3. Good list. Mine would look a lot like yours, but you also gave me some to think about. Wanting to make a difference does require us to refocus from time to time and find the optimism once again. Some would say that it is too idealistic to think this way, but it is very real to me. I teach in an urban school district, and to me it is like a mission. I am glad to be doing something that has the potential to make a difference...for an individual student, for a family, for a class, for a school, for my colleagues...and for my own life. Thanks for the reminder!

  4. I'm struck by...to learn how to be a mom. I agree! Back then we also didn't know how...becoming a mom would help us to be a better teacher. There were times, I admit, that sometimes my kids at school became 'all consuming'. That fine balance is what I've seemed to struggle with. xo nanc PS I love your blog background.

  5. I can't help but wonder about those rough days. It was such a powerful line to begin, "The first four days of this week have been horrendous." But you did turn it around and I'm sure today will turn around as well. You need to treat yourself this weekend! Thinking of you today!

  6. Your list makes absolute sense. The last sentence is my sentence. My children never understand why I am a teacher because at home I usually let all the stress pour out, because my husband is a calm and impartial listener and a caring comforter. Maybe I should voice my list of reasons to them.

  7. What a great list to post where you might find it on a "down day" (or week - as the case may be!) ... on a cabinet at school, perhaps your mirror at home. Uplifting!

  8. There...didn't making that list make you feel better. We all need to do this from time to time, especially after one of "those" weeks!

  9. Oh, those days. I'm glad you found a way to return to a better frame of mind. Sometimes it's harder than others! Have a great (and restful) weekend!

  10. Wanda,
We have all been there whether it is at this time or in the past! The spirit of why you became a teacher came out loud, strong and clear! I hope it uplifted you, it was uplifting to me!
