Full Moon

The moon shines on the river revealing not one but two moons. One in the sky large and yellow...one in the water with ripples running through it. It is large... not quite full but close...very close.
I shudder while staring at it.  I recall the loud chatty voices of my students. Is the moon increasing their volume? Is the moon revving up their motors? Scientists say no but teachers, hospital workers, caretakers in elderly complexes and mental health care workers will tell you yes.
The waxing moon always seems more powerful than the waning moon. Three days before the moon rises in all its glory our school personnel begin to feel its effects. Inappropriate behaviors are on the rise. Volume levels are on the rise. Tired children come to school with little tolerance for other tired children. This week, Tuesday was rough. Wednesday will be tougher. On Thursday, I will be asking why did I choose this profession?
Then Friday, students will start to wane like the moon. They will be a bit more controlled...a bit quieter...a bit more tolerant. By next Monday I will remember why I chose this profession.
