Memories

The kitchen rocking chair moves to and fro as I write this first slice. I look out the large bay window and watch the snow make its quiet decent to the ground. My nose takes in the buttermilk pancake aroma still hanging in the air. Yes, buttermilk pancakes.
It does not seem so long ago that snow days were filled with whoops of joy from our two boys as they tumbled down the stairs. Snow days were always a major celebration which began with special pancakes made in shapes of snowmen or gingerbread boys. They warmed our tummies and hearts while we planned all the things we would do with our free time. My husband would get ready for work and the kids and I would tease him with our plans for reading, watching TV, playing games, and having great fun in the new fallen snow. He would tease back that we were going to be going to school in July!
Our boys are now grown with significant others and homes of their own in states far away. I know they too remember those days fondly for I will get a phone call from each of them today. The first question...did you make the pancakes?
Yes, I made the pancakes to be savored first by our dog, Holly...then my husband...and finally me, buttermilk pancake creator. I sit looking out the bay window rocking to and fro with a tummy full of buttermilk pancakes and heart filled with wonderful memories of our family long ago...waiting for the phone to ring.
